Sleep Apnea Q & A

What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder in which your breathing slows substantially or stops completely as you sleep. When your brain recognizes the lack of oxygen, it stimulates respiration — which often causes a partial awakening.

People with sleep apnea may experience more than 30 breathing pauses in a single hour of sleep, with each one lasting anywhere from a few seconds to more than a minute.

The three main types of sleep apnea are:

Obstructive sleep apnea

The most common type of the disorder, obstructive sleep apnea occurs when your tongue and the soft tissues of your throat collapse and block your airway.

Central sleep apnea

This form of sleep apnea happens when your brain doesn’t send proper signals to the muscles that control respiration.

Complex sleep apnea syndrome

Also called treatment-emergent central sleep apnea, this condition is a combination of both obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea.

What are the signs of sleep apnea?

While you don’t have to have a snoring problem to be diagnosed with sleep apnea, loud, chronic snoring is a tell-tale sign of the disorder. Other common signs of sleep apnea include:

  • Episodes of paused breathing during sleep (as witnessed by another person)
  • Abrupt awakenings, which may be accompanied by shortness of breath
  • Usually waking up with a dry mouth or a sore throat
  • Chronic headaches in the morning
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness, irritability, or difficulty paying attention

What are the health risks of sleep apnea?

If you think that loud, disruptive snoring is the worst part about sleep apnea, think again: Sleep apnea can increase your risk of a range of serious health problems, including high blood pressure, heart attacks, and strokes. People with untreated sleep apnea are also more likely to develop insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and liver problems.

Because people with sleep apnea are also less likely to experience restorative sleep at night, they’re more likely to fall asleep unexpectedly during the day, increasing the risk of accidents on the road or at work.

How is sleep apnea treated?

Your sleep apnea treatment approach depends on your specific diagnosis, including both the type of sleep apnea you have and its degree of severity. If you have mild to moderate sleep apnea and you’re looking for a simple and effective solution, Dr. Kuo can help.

He provides custom oral appliances, including night guards, to help relieve chronic snoring and prevent breathing pauses. These devices are designed to move your jaw into a position that helps keep your airway open as you sleep.

Dr. Kuo can ensure your custom appliance continues to fit properly during your annual or semi-annual dental cleaning and exam.
