Root Canals Q&A

by Gregory D. Kuo, DDS, MS

What is a root canal?

Root canals are procedures that repair or save teeth. They’re named after the chamber in the center of the tooth that contains the tooth’s nerve.

The procedure is necessary in cases of advanced decay or when the tooth's pulp is exposed to bacteria that can lead to an infection that can cause swelling, pain, abscesses, and possible nerve damage. Root canals create structural support to the existing tooth with the use of dental material and the installation of a crown over your natural tooth.

What happens during a root canal procedure?

Dr. Kuo takes X-rays to determine the shape of your tooth’s root canal and to detect the presence of infection.

He administers a local anesthetic to the area surrounding the damaged tooth before your root canal begins. Next, he drills a hole into the damaged tooth and removes the connective tissue and nerve from its interior.

After scrubbing away debris and thoroughly cleaning the tooth chamber, he fills the space with a special dental material. After that, an impression is made of your tooth so a crown can be crafted that matches the shape, size, and color of the surrounding teeth.

Finally, a temporary crown is cemented over the tooth to protect the unfinished restoration.

When the permanent crown is ready, Dr. Kuo removes your temporary metal crown. He cleans and dries your reconstructed tooth, and cements your new crown into place.

What can I expect after having a root canal?

The treated area may be sensitive for a few days after your procedure. Dr. Kuo recommends over-the-counter pain medications for any discomfort you may experience after your root canal. If pain becomes persistent or severe, Dr. Kuo may prescribe stronger pain medications.

There’s no special care needed after your crown is installed. Brush, floss, and use an antiseptic mouthwash regularly and follow up with routine dental exams and cleanings to prevent future decay.
